Maybe You Should Talk to Someone

Sometimes I just need a little help. Why do I try to take the world on by myself?

-Fitz and the Tantrums

It is incredibly difficult to ask for help, isn’t it? In our individualized culture, we are taught to take care of things on our own, to be self-sufficient. Admitting that we need support is often seen as a weakness, and pride can get in the way of leaning on others when we need it most. I am sure I’m not the only one who knows this firsthand.

In her book “Maybe You Should Talk to Someone,” therapist and writer Lori Gottlieb offers insight into both her clinical world and her personal life as she navigates her own therapy experience. She takes readers on a journey through client stories of love, loss, and heartache, as well as her own vulnerabilities in session as a client herself. It is beautifully written, witty, and honest.

Wouldn’t it be great if we changed the script here? That asking for help and support when we need it is actually quite brave and vulnerable, and demonstrates a tremendous amount of strength from within. It’s also a model for those around us. After all, we are not meant to walk this crazy world alone! Treat yourself to a read of Gottlieb’s insightful book! CLICK HERE to listen to her podcast interview on Fresh Air.
